"...the quiet of the imagination"

Linda Coles was born in "Grammie's House", the subject of one of her paintings, at Savage Cove on the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Many of her paintings are based on experiences which have a connection to the people, the landscape and way of life in Newfoundland and Labrador. The cultural and natural environments provide experiences which become the starting points for many of her creative endeavours. Linda's affinity with the past, in Newfoundland and Labrador, is a constant driving force and part of a deeper commitment to preserving, for future generations, images which no longer exist outside the quiet of the imagination.

Linda is delighted that many of her original works of art are in the collections of people in Canada, the United States and Europe. The watercolor, "When Fishing Was Good", depicting those days when the cod fishery was a way of life in the outports of the province, was selected for the Savage Cove entry in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador. Her work has also been featured on the cover of the Downhomer magazine, in The Gallery column of the Independent, In The Focus colum of the Northern Pen, and in The Arts column for The Telegram.

Linda lives and studies in St. John's, after spending many years as a primary and elementary teacher throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. She is currently into a second year as President of the Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
